Our Review Methodology
CoquiPaws reviews are research-based, not hands-on. We’re upfront about that because most pet product sites blur the line, and readers deserve to know exactly what kind of analysis they’re reading before they act on it.
What “Research-Based” Actually Means
For every guide, we work through the same five-step process:
- Verified customer review analysis. We read 200–500+ verified customer reviews per product, looking for patterns rather than cherry-picked quotes — recurring praise, recurring complaints, and long-term durability reports that only show up after months of real use.
- Manufacturer specifications. We cross-check marketing claims against official spec sheets, materials disclosures, and published dimensions.
- Veterinary and scientific sources. When a product touches health, behavior, or nutrition, we cite peer-reviewed research, .gov resources, and .edu veterinary school publications — never a manufacturer’s own health claims taken at face value.
- Comparative analysis. Every recommendation is benchmarked against at least two real alternatives, so you see the actual trade-offs instead of a single product in isolation.
- Honest “not for you” sections. We tell you who a product is wrong for, not just who it’s right for. If nothing on the market is worth buying yet, we say that too.
What We Don’t Do
- We don’t buy or receive every product we review. CoquiPaws is a small, independent operation, and we’re transparent about that rather than pretending otherwise. When we do have hands-on experience with a product, the article says so explicitly. When we don’t, it says that too.
- We don’t accept payment for a positive review. No brand pays for a top ranking, and higher potential commissions never move a product up the list.
- We don’t recommend everything. We routinely pass on popular, heavily-marketed products when the research doesn’t back up the hype.
Sourcing Standards
Every claim in a CoquiPaws guide traces back to one of three sources, and we say which:
- Verified customer reviews — read in bulk, checked for consistency across hundreds of independent buyers rather than a handful of quotes.
- Manufacturer documentation — spec sheets, care instructions, and official product pages, checked against what the product actually claims to do.
- Independent veterinary and scientific sources — organizations like the Cornell Feline Health Center, the AVMA, and the ASPCA, cited by name and linked directly.
How We Score and Rank
We don’t use a single weighted number that hides the reasoning behind it. Instead, every guide compares options across explicit, named criteria — price, durability signals, ease of maintenance, and category-specific factors like filtration or capacity — so you can see exactly why one product ranks above another, and weigh those factors differently yourself if your priorities differ from ours.
Keeping Content Current
Every article shows a last-updated date. Prices, availability, and product specs change; when we catch something outdated, we correct it rather than leaving stale information live. If you spot something that’s changed, let us know — reader corrections are one of our main update triggers.
Questions About a Specific Review
If you want to know exactly what went into a specific guide — how many reviews we read, which sources we cited, or whether we had hands-on access to the product — email coquipaws@gmail.com. We’ll tell you.
